People living in Derry, particularly those living on their own, have been urged to use caution when answering their doors during the hours of darkness.
The warning comes from Sinn Fein Cllr Colly Kelly who said there were increased fears and concern in the community over the number of distraction and walk-in robberies taking place in the city
In one incident, 49-year-old Eddie O’Hagan was ko’d and robbed by a couple who he had allowed into his Beechwood Crescent home after they had “sought shelter” from adverse weather conditions.
Cllr Kelly said everyone should always check the identification of people looking to access their homes.
Cllr Kelly said: “There are concerns and fears out there in the community over distraction robberies and walk-in robberies being reported in the media.
“On many occasions, we hear of such incidents and never think it will happen to us and that someone else will be the victim.”
Cllr Kelly added: “I would appeal to people who are just nipping out to the local shop, calling with a neighbour or just going to Mass for half an hour to ensure they lock their doors at all times.
“The criminals carrying out these acts are always on the lookout for their next victim. All too often now they are looking for car keys, whatever money they can get their hands on and can be in and out of a house in a couple of minutes.”
Cllr Kelly concluded: “Those engaged in this type of activity, care nothing for the hurt, fear and damage they cause, but only for their own selfish greed.”
