Victims of domestic violence in Derry have been urged by a local councillor not to suffer in silence and to seek help.
Sinn Cllr Patricia Logue said Ireland had some of the highest recorded incidents of domestic violence in Europe and it was “totally” unacceptable and should not be tolerated.
Cllr Logue appealed to anyone in Derry suffering from the effects of domestic violence to seek help and not to suffer alone as there was “help out there.”
She stressed while domestic violence was perpetrated mostly against women there wre also male victims and it must be opposed no matter where it came from.
Cllr Logue added: We all know the damage domestic violence causes to its victims and children who experience it in the home.
“Sadly we always see a rise in such violence around Christmas and New Year time.
‘The destructive impacts of that violence can be carried right through into their adult lives.”
Cllr Logue concluded: :People need to realise no level of domestic violence is acceptable. We must lift the stigma associated with it if it is to be tackled properly and introduce measure that allows victims to come forward and report incidents in a dignified way.”
