aTail ender Boyd Rankin has played a crucial role in helping England avoid the follow-on against Australia in the fifth and final Test in the Ashes series being played at the RCG in Sydney.
The Bready bowler came in as 11th man to hit the crucial run to make the hosts bat again.
Rankin came to the crease with England at 125-9 and hit the vital score with a four.
He went on to score 13 – just one less than England’s three opening batsmen – before being bowled off the pads by Australia’s star bowler Johnson.
In his 21 minutes at the crease, Rankin smashed two fours off 22 balls to take visitors’ total at the end of their first innings to 155, a deficit of 171.
At the end of the day’s play, Australia extended their lead to 311, having score 140-4 in their second innings.
With the ball, Rankin has showed no signs of the problem that saw him leave the field of play on the first day’s play having just bowled 8.2 overs.
The problem, thought at the time to be a hamstring injury, was later confirmed to be cramp.
In the Aussies’ second innings, Rankin is still waiting on his first wicket having bowled six overs at a cost of 25 runs.
