North West cricketer Boyd Rankin has retained his place in the England squad to take on Australia in the one day international series beginning next week.
The Bready bowler got is first Test wicket in the fifth and final Ashes Test in Sydney, although it came in another humiliating defeat for the English, who were defeated by 281 runs with two of the five days play remaining a the RCG in Sydney.
Tailender Siddle was caught by Bairstow off the bowling of Rankin to bring the Aussie’s second innings to a close on 276 giving them a lead of 448 – and leaving the visitors facing a 5-0 whitewash.
Unlike England’s first innings, in which one of his 13 runs saved the follow-on, “last man in” Rankin went for a “duck” when caught at second slip by Clarke off the bowling of man of the match Ryan Harris with the score on 166.
Rankin’s dismissal came after facing only two balls having spent two minutes at the crease.
Rankin bowled 12.3 overs in the Aussies second innings, ending up with figures of one wicket for 47 runs, having being introduced to the English attack when the hosts were on 200-5.
However, the Warwickshire paceman’s Test debut will be remembered for his limping off the field of play having bowling only 8.2 overs in the Ausrtralia’s first innings with what was thought to be a hamstring injury which later turned out to be cramp.
Rankin will now looking forward to playing a more influential role in the one day series having sat out four of the five Test matches.
It was his performances in the one day international series against Australia in England in the summer that earned him his Ashes call-up.
