A hit American television series, starring and produced by Derry actress, Roma Downey, has been nominated for a top accolade at the prestigious People’s Choice Awards to be screened live on American television this week.
“The Bible,” which Roma produced with her husband Mark Burnett, has been shortlisted for the Favourite TV Movie/Mini Series award.
Also nominated in the same category are “Amercan Horror Shory,” “Behind the Candelabra,” “Sharknado” and “The White Queen.”
Among those who will attend the glittering ceremony will be Drew Barrymore, Robert Downey Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, Queen Latifah, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Sandra Bullock, Jessica Alba, Christina Aguilera, LL Cool J and Chris O’Donnell.
Now in its 40th year and unlike the Academy Awards, the People’s Choice Awards is the only major awards show voted on entirely by the public for fan favourites in music, movies and television.
“The Bible,” in which Roma stars as Jesus’s mother, Mary, was first broadcast weekly between 3 March and 31 March last year on the History Channel.
It was screened on this side of the Atlantic over the festive period.
The first episode attracted 13.1 million viewers while the second installment was watched by 10.8 million viewers.
The third installment on St Patrick’s Day was once again the No. 1 show on all of Sunday night television with 10.9 million total viewers.
In total, with subsequent airings, “The Bible” has been seen by more than 100 million viewers.
The series received three Emmy Award nominations for best mini-series, and sound editing and sound mixing.
It also became the most downloaded series on iTunes and became the top-selling DVD mini-series ever in its first week of release in April.
Meanwhile, Roma and her husband have teamed up with 20th Century Fox to release a theatrical film version of the “The Bible” that will be entitled “Son of God.”
The movie, due to be released later this year, will reportedly take scenes from the mini-series as well as scenes not shown to viewers to make a two-hour Biblical story focusing on the Resurrection of Jesus.
The awards ceremony will be screened live from 9.00pm (local time) this Wednesday on the CBS Television Network.
The show will be hosted by Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs and will feature performances from Sara Bareilles, OneRepublic and country star Brad Paisley.
Roma’s husband Mark Burnett is an executive producer of the show along with Jane Mun.
