Residents in Derry’s Bogside have become “really scared” following an increase in burglaries it the area, according to a local councillor.
As a result, Sinn Fein Cllr Colly Kelly has appealed to homeowners to be vigilant and to provide information to police about those involved in order to stop criminals preying on their community.
Cllr Kelly said: “People are really scared about the upsurge in the amount of burglaries over recent weeks.
“It’s not something that is common in the Bogside area. This is still a part of the town where there is a tradition that people would leave their front doors unlocked and neighbours would go in and out of each other houses.
“Sadly, there is a criminal element looking to exploit that for quick gain. It is hard to think of a more cowardly or shameful act than that of invading a person’s home with the intent of theft, my thoughts are with those who have been affected by these recent acts.”
Cllr Kelly said thieves had “no respect” for the property of homeowners and helping to catch them was the “best way” of safeguarding homes.
Cllr Kelly added:I would appeal to the public to practice vigilance in the area in an effort to catch those involved and prevent further break-ins”
He concluded: “I would appeal to anyone with information or who may have seen anything to pass this to the PSNI. People like this cannot be allowed to prey on our community.”
