The PSNI and Gardai are studying CCTV footage as part of a cross-border hunt for a man behind a vicious failed armed robbery which left one person injured.
Police on both sides of the border are searching for the robber who attacked a male employee when he refused to hand over cash during the raid at the Bureau de Change in the Diamond, Castlederg, shortly after 2.00pm on Monday last.
During a struggle, the staff member was struck in the face and sustained two stab wounds to his back which required ten stitches.
The raider is described as being in his early 20s, about 5’10” tall with short black hair and was wearing a beige round-necked jumper.
Following the struggle, suspect fled empty-handed and made off in a blue Nissan Micra, registration number FJZ 9609, which was later found abandoned next to the AIB bank in Lifford, Co. Donegal.
Castlederg Sinn Féin Councillor Ruairí Mc Hugh has condemned the incident, describing it as a “cowardly act.”
He said: ”I would totally condemn the person responsible for this cowardly act. The owner who is a well respected person has worked hard to make this business a success and I have no doubt that he and any staff will be left traumatised as a consequence of this incident.
He added: “I would urge anyone with any information to bring it to the attention of the relevant authorities so that the perpetrator is brought to book for this disgraceful act.”
Strabane police chief Chief Inspector Andy Lemon said said it was believed other individuals had used the vehicle involved and appealing to anyone who may have seen it in the Diamond area of Castlederg on Monday afternoon, or in Lifford where it was abandoned, to contact either the PSNI or An Garda Siochana.”
