One person has been killed and four seriously injured in a horror road crash near Strabane.
The two-vehicle collision, understood to have involved a car and a jeep, occurred shortly before 11.00am this morning on the A5 Melmount Road, the main road from Sion Mills to Victoria Bridge.
The main Derry to Omagh road has been closed and diversions are in place with police advising motorists to avoid the area.
Members of the public have been asked to attend the Accident and Emergency Department at Altnagelvin Hospital only “if absolutely necessary.”
This morning’s crash is the second fatal collision in the area within five days.
Last Friday, a 65-year-old man was killed when the Jaguar car he was driving was in collision with a Range Rover and an Audi A4.
Patrick Leonard, SDLP candidate in the upcoming local government election, said the latest crash had “shocked” the area.
He said: “This is an absolute tragedy that has shocked the entire area, coming so close after last Friday’s crash.
“It is a terrible start to the New Year. My sympathy goes out to all those involved.”
Mr Leonoard said he would be seeking a meeting with relevant authorities to see what road safety improvements could be implemented in roads in the area.
