As children return to classes after the Christmas and New Year break, motorists in Derry have been called on to drive with caution near schools, especially with the adverse weather conditions set to continue.
The call comes from Sinn Fein Cllr Patricia Logue said weather conditions over the past week had left roads in a “treacherous” condition and appealed to drivers to slow down and “show due care and attention” when approaching schools.
Cllr Logu said: “The weather conditions over the past week have been extremely dangerous. Road conditions have been treacherous and visibility reduced due to lashing rain and high winds. And that is due to continue for a few more days.
“I would appeal for drivers to slow down going past schools and to show due care and attention. There will be an increase in the amount of traffic on our roads particularly in the morning which at this time of year is still very dark. It only takes a split second for an accident to occur.”
Cllr Logue concluded: “By motorists slowing down that few less miles per hour and parents warning their children to be that little extra careful particularly crossing the road outside their school, hopefully we can prevent potential accidents.”
