Sinn Féin Councillor Tony Hassan is to seek a multi-agency meeting to see what can be done to introduce additional safety measures on the Culmore Point Road adjacent to Lough Foyle during high tides and adverse weather conditions.
Cllr Hassan made his call after high tides breached sections of the wall on the road down to the yacht club at Culmore.
Cllr Hassan, who visited the area on several occasions during the recent adverse weatheer conditions, said there wasn’t the damage that there had been in other parts of the country it is was nonetheless worrying for residents living close to the river front.
He added: “The road down to the yacht club was covered in surface water and large pieces of debris were all over the roadway making it difficult for anyone who had to travel along it.
“With each winter now experiencing extreme weather conditions i believe we need to be doing all we can to ensure residents living beside the River Foyle get as much protection as possible.”
Cllr Hassan concluded: “I will be seeking a multi-agency meeting to see what additional measures can be introduced to ease residents’ concerns.”
Meanwhile, Cllr Hassan’s party colleague Cllr Patricia Logue has revealed she was working closely with Road Service to ensure any potential flooding in the Foyle Road area was “resolved as speedily as possible.”
Cllr was speaking after residents from the area, which is adjacent to the River Foyle, expressed concerns about flooding during heavy rainfall.
Cllr Logue said she had been in contact with Road Service to ensure that the gullies along Foyle Road were cleaned.
She added: “I also been in contact with the emergency incident officer at Derry City Council who has informed me they have sandbags at the ready if needed and the Housing Executive has sandbags ready for Coshowen.
“There are a number areas along Foyle Road where there are problems following heavy rainfall particularly at the lay-bys and footpaths at the Moore Walk, Glendara, Glenanne and Old City Close.”
Cllr Logue concluded: “I will be working closely with Road Service to ensure that if residents have concerns with potential flooding that they are resolved as speedily as possible.”
