Derry City Council’s planning committee has given the green light for the consrtuction of a 61-bedroom nursing home at Culmore of the outskirts of the city.
The development of the former Avondale Nursing Home, which closed in 2007, has been welcomed SDLP Cllr Angela Dobbins.
Cllr Dobbins said: “Since the closure of Avondale, the site has been dilapidated. Thieves have stripped it of any materials worthy and have left it in a very danger state.
“Last year, when i raised these concerns to the new owner, Dr Bredan McDoland, the former home was quickly secured and work commenced to upgrade the pediments.
“Dr McDonald has a proven track record of nursing homes with the flagship Slievenamon Nursing Home in Omagh which has been given a Gold Standard Award from Stirling University.”
Cllr Dobbins said she was “delighted” Avondale was to be restored to its “former glory” and that it would remain a residential home not only for the elderly but for those with dementia.”
She added: “It will be an enhancement to this area and will create a much needed facility in our city.”
Cllr Dobbins said she expected the construction of the new 61-bed nursing home to begin “very soon.”
