A “proactive plan” is needed to tackle Derry’s housing crisis.
That’s according to Sinn Féin who are to continue to fight for more social and affordable homes in the Derry area over the next five to ten years, the party’s housing spokesperson has said.
Cllr Tony Hassan said the past year had been a very difficult time in the housing market across the North, particularly for those looking to purchase their first home.
He added: “We have all seen the difficulties faced by first time buyers in trying obtain a mortgage, and the 2,000 people that are homeless in the city.”
Cllr Hassan called for a “proactive plan” for the building of hundreds of social and affordable homes in the Derry area for the next five to ten years, and the massive H2 site on Buncrana Road was the place to do it.
He added: “We have been told by the planning service that approval for development on the site should be granted soon so i am appealing to developers, housing associations, NIHE and planners to come together to look at a large scale house building programme for the site.”
Cllr Hassan said Sinn Féin would continue to campaign in 2014 for more affordable and social housing to be built in Derry to tackle the “growing housing crisis.”
He conclude: “Everyone who works with the homeless, including the statutory housing agencies knows that the numbers of new builds that are planned for the city are simply not enough to tackle the ever-growing problem.”
