The Derry-“LondonDerry” Doire has taken an early lead in Race 8 – from Brisbane to Singapore – of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race.
Having won Race 6 been narrowly beaten into second place in Race 7, Derry skipper Sean McCarter revealed the had taken a chance to get out front early.
He said: “We were jostling for first position with Switzerland and OneDLL with the decision of whether or not to risk gybing our newly repaired heavyweight kite. To cut a long story short, we took the chance, survived the gybe, went ahead and tore the heavy weight kite shortly afterwards in a round-up, dropped it and cruised in under white sails to a respectable second place.”
However, Sean was quick to point out there was a long way to go until the finish of the 4,500 race and revealed they face stiff opposition for the lead.
He said: “We are currently 115 north, north east of the town of Bundaberg made famous by Australia’s exported whiskey tasting rum. We have about 700 miles away from the Scoring Gate just south east of Papua New Guinea and can see OneDLL hot on our heels again.”
