St Mary’s College in Derry has been congratulated by Sinn Fein on winning the prestigious Eli Lilly Special Award for their project “A comparative study of the antioxidant effects of natural and synthetic food preservative” at the 50th BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition held at the RDS in Dublin.
Sinn Fein’s education spokesperson Councillor Patricia Logue said it was “great news” the college had won the Eli Lilly Special Award and that Eadaoin Nash took the individual junior first place accolade.
Cllr Logue said such competitions offered children from Derry an excellent opportunity to showcase their talents and to demonstrate their creative and innovative skills in their subject areas.
She added: “Science is an important subject with huge technological leaps being made year by year, so it is crucial our young people are educated and encouraged to develop their skills in this area.”
Cllr Logue concluded: “It is important to promote and invest in STEM (Science, Technology Engineering and Maths), subjects so that more and more young people can develop careers through science based industries.”
