Residents in the Carnhill, Galliagh and Shantallow areas of Derry have been advised to be “extra vigilant” following a increase in car crime in the city.burnedcar

Sinn Féin Councillor Elisha McCallion has expressed concern that the increase in car theft and destruction throughout Derry has seen a considerable number of the vehicles then being left in the greater Shantallow area before being burnt or destroyed.

Councillor McCallion said those responsible “need to be caught” and revealed she had met with PSNI chiefs in the city to get more police resources deployed in the areas affected.

She said: “Over the last couple of years car theft and vandalism has decreased significantly in these areas.

“Whilst this is positive the recent increase is a cause for concern and the past four to six weeks have been very troubling for those living in area.”

Cllr McCallion said “all is being done” to catch those responsible.

She added: “I and other Sinn Féin representatives have met with the PSNI and appealed for an increased presence in the areas affected.”

Cllr McCallion concluded: “This escalation of vandalism needs to be nipped in the bud before things get out of hand.”
