Unionist leaders are “failing” the people of Ireland, the European Parliament has been told.
Speaking about the recent Haass Talks in Strasbourg last night, Sinn MEP Martina Anderson called on both the British and Irish Governments to make “clear statements” in support of the Haass proposals.
Ms Anderson told MEPs Sinn Féin, despite some reservations endorsed the recommendations as an “honourable compromise.”
She added: “However, nionism rejected them – Unionism ‘says no’ – again!”
“Irish republicans have stretched ourselves and we are up for the challenge that the Haass proposals contain.
“However, unionist leaders are failing our people and ignoring the clear desire for a compromise agreement.
“The Irish and British Governments must now make clear statements in support of the Haass/O’Sullivan proposals and their implementation.”
Ms Anderson concluded: “They must dedicate financial resources and agree information disclosure necessary for full implementation of all the proposals.”
