With a significant increase in the number of children coming into care, the ongoing effort to recruit more foster carers continues over the coming weeks with information evenings being held in Derry and Strabane.
Currently there is a national shortage of foster families who can offer a safe and caring home to children, teenagers, as well as children with disabilities and sibling groups.
An additional 200 foster families are needed across Northern Ireland during 2014 to meet the needs of children and young people requiring foster care.
The Western Health and Social Services Trust is looking to recruit people who are patient, understanding, compassionate and flexible.
The information sessions will allow those considering offering foster care, to learn more about the many benefits individuals and couples can bring to children and young people in need of short or long term care.
Information sessions are open to all members of the public:
:: Thursday 30 January – Da Vincis Hotel, Derry at 7.30pm: all types of foster care
:: Tuesday 28 January – Fir Trees, Strabane at 7.30pm: all types of foster care
:: Tuesday 11 February – Da Vinics Hotel, Derry at 7.30pm: teenage foster care.
Visitors will be able to speak to current foster carers and social workers about any questions they have about being a foster carer.
You do not have to pre-register and tea and coffee will be available.
Following each session, a detailed information pack will be available that explains more about being a foster carer, the support available and the application process.
Foster carers receive allowances depending on the age and number of children.
Pat Armstrong, Head of Fostering and Adoption for the Western Trust said: “We are especially keen to recruit those who are able to foster teenagers, sibling groups, and children on a long term basis who are unable to return to the care of their birth families.”
