Brian Tierney has been selected to take the place of former SDLP Councillor Shaun Gallagher on Derry City Council.
Cllr Tierney, a nephew of former SDLP MLA and Derry Mayor John Tierney, was co-opted at a SDLP special selection convention in the City Hotel last night.
The move followed the resignation of veteran Shantallow councillor Shaun Gallagher last month.
Accepting his selection by party members in Shantallow, Cllr Tierney said he was filled with “pride, excitement and enthusiasm” and pledged to remain “loyal and committed to promoting and supporting the SDLP in building a better and brighter future for all our citizens”.
Cllr Tierney added he would now focus his best efforts on helping the team return four SDLP seats in the Ballyarnett District Electoral Area (DEA) in May.
Cllr Tierney singled out a range of issues which he intends to focus on resolving as part of Derry City Council.
He said: “In order to tackle issues such as unemployment, housing, poverty and the provision of better services there is no question that we need investment in many areas.”
And he paid tribute to the “sterling service” of his predecessor.
He said: “In Shaun Gallagher there is no question that we are losing an excellent councillor, and I’d like to pay tribute to him. I would like to thank him for his excellent contribution not only to Shantallow, but throughout the city and I wish him and his wife Majella all the best for the future.”
