Summer already looks brighter for children in Strabane after the Northern Ireland Housing Executive confirmed the funding of a month-long activity scheme.
The Lisnafin/Ardnalee Trust Cross-Community Development Association has been awarded a community grant of £4,500 which will ensure that 45 children, aged seven to 14, can avail of sports coaching and a series of summer trips.
Project co-ordinator Damien Gavigan said he was delighted the Housing Executive had stepped in to fund the summer project.
He said: “The reality is that many people live on the poverty line and don’t have the money for holidays. Mobility is also an issue here in Strabane as many parents don’t have cars.
“The summer scheme, which is free of charge, will allow the children to get out of the town and have other experiences and it’s something they can relate to their peer group when they return to school at the start of the new term.
“It’s also good for their health and well-being and helps them to build relationships. Many of the young people who were involved in the summer schemes previously have returned to help us out.”
He concluded: “The reaction from parents and residents is also good as it means the children have something to do and they are not hanging around the street corners and getting into mischief.”
