Derry’s amateur sports clubs have been called on to get involved in consultation seeking views on rates exemption.
The call comes from local Sinn Fein Cllr Eric McGinley who said a Private Members Bill brought before the Stormont Assembly by his party colleague Daithí McKay was intended to make amateur sports clubs fully exempt from rates.
Cllr McGinley said: “At present, amateur clubs are entitled to 80% rate relief which was introduced to support grassroots sport.
“In these very challenging economic times however many clubs are still struggling to survive and there is a real risk that the benefits enjoyed by so many people through the pursuit of sporting activities will be lost.”
Cllr McGinley said the Bill was “extremely timely” and encouraged amateur sports clubs to respond to the consultation.
He concluded: “I have brought this initiative to the attention of Derry City Council’s Sports Development section and the Derry & District Sports Council.”
The consultation closes on 13 next February 13th and the survey can be found at www.surveymonkey.com/s/bp2lnxr.
