A number of sets of steps in the  Glenowen area of Derry that residents feared may be removed due to health and safety concerns are to be replaced after long campaign.GLENOWEN

According to SInn Fein Cllr Colly Kelly  agreement was reached and new steps are be put in place.

Cllr Kelly said the process began in February last year when he attended onsite meeting with residents concerned about the state of the steps adjacent to their home.

He added: :We initially ran into problems as the steps were built a number of years earlier and no one was liable for them.

“There was a fear they could be removed completely due to health and safety concerns. This was of major concern for residents as the steps have always been there and were a part of their daily lives accessing their homes.

“After consultation with the residents and many meetings with Apex agreement was reached and a guarantee was given that new steps would be put in place with proper health and safety regulations.”

Cllr Kelly said the “good news” was that the process had now moved on significantly and should come before the monthly planning committee meeting at Derry City Council next month.

He concluded: “Hopefully the work started as soon as possible.”
