Finn Harps captain Kevin McHugh is organising a sponsored 5K run/walk in aid of former Derry City team mate Mark Farren.
The event is to take place just across the border in Killea on the 8 February next and will give football supporters the opportunity to show their appreciation and support for the former Candystripes striker on his road to recovery.
Farren, now with Irish Premiership club Glenavon, has suffered a setback in his recovery from a benign grade 2 brain tumour that was diagnosed on Christmas Eve 2008.
Derry’s record goalscorer with 113 goals announced at the start of the year that following a routine six-monthly scan, he required a six week course of preventative radiotherapy.
Kevin McHugh said he hoped that a big crowd would come out in support of the 31-year-old who, he said, had shown “remarkable bravery and courage” throughout his battle with this illness.
Registration will take place at the Killea FC clubhouse from 9.00am with the run/walk starting at 10.30am.
There is also a sponsor card for people to download if they wish to do a bit extra.
Prizes will be awarded and refreshments will be served afterwards in the clubhouse.
Participants are encouraged to wear their club colours if possible for the run.
Special thanks to the sponsors of the event Finn Harps FC, Kernan’s Eurospar, PFAI, Lifford AC and Killea FC for hosting the event.
As part of their pre-season preparations the Finn Harps squad will be running the 5K.
