A levy on road hauliers in the North would have “series implications” for the industry throughout Ireland, Derry MLA Raymond McCartney has said.
The Sinn Fein representative was speaking after members of the Assembly’s Environment Committee were informed of a consultation on the introduction of a new levy for Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) had started earlier this month and would end on 4 February 4 next.
Mr McCartney revealed Sinn Féin had requested a briefing from Department of Environment officials on the proposals to introduce a levy on road hauliers using the North’s road network.
He added: “Sinn Féin has serious concerns over the imposition of any new charges on the road haulage industry which will impact across the island and which will affect All Ireland trade especially given the harsh economic conditions this industry has operated in over the last number of years.”
While he awaited the briefing from the department to ascertain all the detail, Mr McCartney urged all those across the industry such as haulage companies, freight companies or other motoring organisations to participate in the consultation process.
