The Electoral Office has been called on to set up Registration and “ID” Clinics in Derry ahead of May’s local government elections.
The call comes from Sinn Féin Councillor Barney O’Hagan who revealed he has written to Electoral Office requesting Registration and ID Clinics be organized for the old Northland ward area of Derry – now named Foyleside ward.
Cllr O’Hagan said: “The Election Registration process rolled out late last year has resulted in large numbers of people being removed from the Electoral Register.”
Cllr O’Hagan said every effort must be made to ensure everyone had an opportunity to register and acquire the necessary ID to enable maximum participation in the forthcoming Elections
He concluded: “Local registration Clinics provide a good opportunity to encourage constituents to register in good time for the elections and apply for an electoral identity card if they do not have one of the prescribed photographic documents for voting.”
