The family of murdered Sinn Fein Councillor Eddie Fullerton are in Brussels as their campaign to bring a case against the Irish Government for its failure to adequately investigate the killing continues.
Cllr Fullerton – a popular and well-known member of both Donegal County Council and Buncrana Town Council – was shot dead by loyalist gunmen in his Cockhill home in Buncrana on 25 May 1991.
His family believe the Irish State are in violation of Article 2 of the European Convention of Human Rights by not properly investigating the killing.
To date, no one has been charged with Cllr Fullerton’s murder.
From the time of killing, there have been allegations the councillor’s death was the result of collusion involving British security forces and loyalist paramilitaries.
An investigation by the Northern Ireland Police Ombudsman’s Office is expected to be published in the coming weeks.
Cllr Fullerton’s daughter Amanda is among a 30 strong delegation being hosted in Brussels by Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson.
The delegation also includes representatives from various campaigns including the New Lodge, Ballymurphy and Loughlinisland massacres as well as Paul O’Connor of the Pat Finucane Centre.
Prior to departure, Ms Anderson said the purpose of the delegation waas to provide a European platform to the families, campaign groups, legal representatives and individuals who had “strained against tremendous odds” over the years to expose “Britain’s Dirty War in Ireland.”
She added: “It is intended to expose MEPs and others in Europe to the reality of the role Britain has played in our country’s affairs and that it is not allowed to be ignored or forgotten, or airbrushed from any attempt to deal with the legacy of our past.”
She concluded: “The British Government have used every legal and extra-legal move in the book to try to hide what they did – what their polices were, and actions carried out by its forces – both directly and in collusion with unionist murder gangs.”
