Derry athletes brought home an impressive haul of gold, silver and bronze medals from the Woodies DIY AAI National Masters Indoors Championships held in the AIT Arena in Athlone on Saturday.
Derry City Track Club duo Cathal McLaughlin (vet 45) and Tim Shiels (vet 35) both returned with gold medals, McLaughlin winning the 1500 metre final in a time of 4:20.25 while Shiels ran 2:01.89 to win the 800 metre final.
Respected athletics journalist Malcolm McCausland (Derry City Track Club) took second place in his veteran 60 1500m race, covering the distance in 5:16.07 while his team mate Robert Bigger won silver in the veteran 55 800m race in a time of 2:16.11.
City of Derry AC’s Philip Donaghy ran 2:11.64 to take bronze in the veteran 45 while Gary McGee (Derry City Track Club) also collected a bronze medal in the veteran 45 category, running 2:12.17 in the 800 metres.
