Pupils at Craigbrack Primary School’s Science and Wildlife Club have teamed up with Faughan Valley Landscape Partnership and the Conservation Volunteers to make their own bird boxes as part of their monthly after-school club activity.
Pupils from ages four to 12 years will get the opportunity today to make their own bird boxes to take home or donate to the school.
As spring approaches birds will begin to look for nesting places and it is important that new nest boxes are erected in areas as we have less and less mature trees in our landscape.
The club is affiliated as a Faughan Valley Landscape Partnership Wildlife Club and past activities have included ecological study visits to local habitats such as woodland, peat bog and rivers.
Derry Mayor Cllr Martin Reilly said this was a “great chance” to get the school children involved whilst educating them about looking after their local environment and wildlife.
He added: “The Faughan Valley is both an area of special scientific interest and a special area of conservation, boasting woods which are natural reserves. It is vital that we preserve this area and this scheme is another way in which the area engages the community in doing just this.”
Club leader Dr Declan Lawlor said: “This is a great educational and fun way to protect our bird species at this time of year.”
The Faughan Valley Landscape Partnership Scheme involves a working partnership between RAPID, Derry City Council and the Woodland Trust supported by Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), “Landscape Partnerships.”
The project vision is to “create a vibrant, natural and cultural diverse landscape within the Faughan Valley that the whole community appreciates, and is engaged with, making it a sustainable landscape for living.”
