Plans to convert the Turner building at Ebrington in Derry’s Waterside into a Tate-affiliated international gallery, a centre for music, a civic gallery art, music therapy centres and a creative digital hub, have been welcomed by the group set up to promote culture and the arts in the city.
In a statement, the Cultural Partnership Forum (CPF) said it supported the development of “artistic practice in all its forms” within the city and region and “warmly” supported the retention of a permanent creative space at Ebrington which would go some way to improving the quality of life of all Derry’s citizens as well as encouraging their inclusion in the arts and cultural life of the city and region.
The CPF said it was “delighted” to hear a representative action committee had been formed in order to save “this vital space.”
The statement added: “At our recent meeting, members heard a presentation from the action committee chairperson Maurice Harron about the group’s plans for Ebrington, which include a Tate-affiliated international gallery, a centre for music, a civic gallery art and music therapy centres and a creative digital hub.
“We welcomed the opportunity to learn about Harron’s proposed ideas for the site. As the collective representative voice for the cultural community we felt that if carried to fruition, these plans could provide a lasting legacy post UK City of Culture for all the citizens of the city.”
