Vandals responsible for daubing grafitti on a children’s £1 million playpark have been accused of attempting to turn the play area and Derry’s Creggan estate into a “ghetto.”
Former city Mayor Kevin Campbell has hit out at those behind the vandalism after the playpark at the “Bishop’s Field” had grafitti daubed on its walls for the fourth time in the past two months.
In the latest attack wording painted on walls attached to the park’s entry gates included “PSNI/RUC Not Welcome.”
Cllr Campbell described the vandalism as “disgraceful.”
The Sinn Fein representative added: “It is disgraceful the Bishop Field play park has been repeatedly targeted in graffiti attacks. Despite the best efforts of the Triax Neighbourhood Management Team to remove this graffiti, which they have done at least four times in the last two months, it is obvious that there are those intent on ghettoising the park and the greater Creggan area.
“This park was hard fought for. It cost more than £1 million and it is used day and daily by children, parents and grandparents.
“I am proud to have helped secure this park for the people of Creggan and I am determined that they should be free to use it without having to run the gauntlet of graffiti, which is absolutely terrible looking ”
He appealed to those behind the attacks and to anyone who had “influence with them,” to to give the children and people of Creggan “a break.”
He concluded: “For years we campaigned to establish a first rate Creggan play park. Now we have it we cannot allow it to be attacked or destroyed.”
