Derry City have signed former Kilmarnock striker Mark Stewart.

The 25-year-old, who was released earlier this month by the Scottish Premiership club, has signed a one year deal and becomes Roddy Collins fifth signing since taking over at the Brandywell.

Speaking after putting pen to paper, Stewart said he was `’over the moon” to join City and conceded Derry’s participation in the Europa League was a major factor in his decision to join the Brandywell club.

Speaking on club’s official website, he added he was looking forward to playing in the Airtricity Premiership.

He said: “If I’m honest I have never really seen the League of Ireland but from training with the lads for a week I’m very impressed with the quality of the entire squad.”

Manager Roddy Collins said he was delighted to capture the Scot who was “very impressive” during a trial period with City.

He added: “Mark came to us through a very reliable source that has been very good in the past, so I knew what I was going to get.

“He has tremendous pace and skill which was exactly what I was looking for. He’s a great lad that fitted in with the squad as soon as he arrived.

“As far as I’m concerned he ticked all the boxes for me and Mark will get better and better as the season goes on.”

The Glaswegian began his professional career at Falkirk where he scored 19 goals in 77 appearances before moving south to Bradford City in the English League Two.

After 12 starts, he returned to Scotland, this time to Dundee who loaned him out briefly to Luton Town before allowing him to leave to join  Kilmarnock in August last year.

Stewart is Collins’ fifth signing, the others being Roddy Collins Junior, Enda Curran, Danny Ventre and Ciaran Gallagher.
