The social media drinking “game” Neknomination should be avoided at all costs, a local election candidate in Derry has said.
The Northern Ireland-based NI NeKNomination Facebook sharing videos of the “game” is to be discontinued after the deaths of two teenagers in the Republic.
More than 10,000 Facebook users ‘liked’ or indicated their support for the page in less than a week.
Those behind the page, have said it would be discontinued and run instead as an alcohol awareness page on the social networking site.
The discontinuation of the page has been welcomed Emmet Doyle, SDLP election candidate in the Moor ward, who said there were “obvious” dangers to “necking” a large amount of alcohol in a short space of time.
He added: “It is common sense that a person will become very quickly inebriated and could cause harm to themselves.
“The last thing we want to see in this city is another young person losing their life. Please do be careful, avoid Neknomination and drink responsibly.”
What is it NekNomination?
:: NekNomination is a drinking game on social media.
:: It is believed to have begun in Australia.
:: The concept of the game has been described as “neck your drink, nominate another.”
:: Facebook and Twitter users who receive a “neknomination” are challenged to down a pint of alcohol in one go, within 24 hours.
:: They post a video of themselves completing the challenge and nominate two of their friends to do the same.
:: “Neknominees” who refuse and break the chain are subject to online ridicule.
At least one death in Ireland has been linked to the craze.
