Derry athlete Keith Shiels recorded yet another personal best in a stunning performance to beat off top class opposition to clinch second place in the 3,000 metres race at yesterday’s Woodies DIY AAI Indoor Open Games, hosted by Athletics Ireland, at the AIT Arena in Athlone.
In what was regarded as one of the performances of the day, the Foyle Valley AC runner – better known for his performances on the roads and cross country – took six seconds off his personal best time to finish in 8.40.90 behind talented Irish athlete Rory Chesser, from Ennis Track Club, who clocked 8.32.38.
Another Derry athlete, Connor Bradley (City of Derry), the current Athletics Northern Ireland 10k (road) champion, also ran a personal best of 3.43.37 to finish fourth in the international men’s 1,500 metres race.
Conor McLaughlin, Strabane Track Club, ran 22.97 seconds to take the tape in the 200 metres while he recorded ran 6.88 seconds finishing runner-up in the 60 metres.
