An “urgent meeting” with the PSNI is being sought by the Foyle branch of the UKIP (United Kingdom Independence Party) following last night’s incident at the Fountain Estate-Bishop Street during which police were attacked.
Police were responding to reports of petrol bombs being thrown into the Fountain from Nailors Row when they were attacked by a crowd throwing missiles.
David Malcolm, Foyle UKIP spokesperson, said last night’s incident was the latest in an “upsurge of attacks” on the Fountain community in the past two weeks.
He added: Paint bomb attacks and stone thowing by people from outside the community have occurred on a regular basis in the last two weeks.
“The fact that these attacks are increasing in intensity with petrol bombs being thrown is a worrying development.
“I have also had reports this morning that wheelie bins were dropped from the Lecky Flyover last night onto the road below.”
Mr Malcolm said there had been “invaluable work” carried out by community leaders and representatives on both sides of the interface to minimise the potential for this kind of incident urged those involved in that peace building to continue that work.
He added: “UKIP chairperson, Kyle Thompson, a lifetime resident of The Fountain, met with residents and the PSNI last week regarding the earlier attacks and I will also be requesting an urgent meeting with police today regarding more pro-active steps that we believe need to be taken to protect those in The Fountain and to identify the perpetrators of these attacks with a view to them being arrested and charged.”
