Derry City Council’s decision to appoint the lead consultant and multi-disciplinary design service to support the Design and Project Management Unit of the Creggan Burn Park Greenway, has brought the project a step closer according to a local councillor.
Council successfully has secured £1,348,000 from the Department of Regional Development to deliver the Derry Active Travel Project and with £160,000 from the Parks Development Budget to undertake greenway and access improvement works the budget for the Creggan Burn Park Greenway, totals more than £500,000
Sinn Fein Cllr Barney O’Hagan said the scheme would address the lack of off road pedestrian and cycleway infrastructure provision in Creggan Burn Park and would provide a “viable connection” between Creggan Burn Park and Ballyarnett Country Park, also linking the Creggan Burn Park green space to Creggan Road, Glen Road, Baldrick Crescent and Lowry’s Lane.
He added: “The main capital elements are the provision of the new pedestrian and cycle path infrastructure within Creggan Burn Park, including planting, street furniture, gates, lighting and drainage.
“New fencing to the perimeter of the park at various locations will prevent unauthorised use of the park, especially by motorbikes and quads.”
Cllr O’Hagan concluded: “Council’s Sports Development section is working on plans for playing pitch provision on the site.”
