The Roads Service has been called to upgrade pedestrians crossings on Glengalliagh Road, one of the busiest thoroughfares in Derry.
The call comes from Sinn Féin Councillor Elisha McCallion who for an upgrade of on the road between Moss Park and Slievemore. Given that the road is one of the busiest in the city.
She said “every avenue” was explored in order to ensure residents had “as safe a path as possible” when crossing roads.
Cllr McCallion said: “The Glengalliagh Road sees a massive amount of traffic on it each day and many people in the local community do not believe that the current crossings are fit for purpose.
“People are fearful of the volume and speed of traffic on the stretch between Moss Park and Slievemore.”
Cllr McCallion said pupils from several different schools use the road on a daily basis and given its proximity to some local shops it was crossed throughout the day by people of all ages.
She concluded: “I am calling on DRD Road Service to look in to the matter and propose a solid pedestrian programme for the area.”
