Police came under attack in Derry last night after responding to reports of petrol bombs being thrown into Fountain Estate from Nailors Row in the Bishop Street area.
A number of missiles were thrown at police vehicles when they at the scene and a short time later rubbish bins were set on fire in Westland Street.
Describing the incident as “minor,” which occurred around 7.00pm, a PSNI spokesperson said police worked with community representatives and maintained in the area throughout the evening.
The incident has been condemned by Sinn Fein Cllr Patricia Logue who said sectarianism, from whatever quarter it came from, was “wrong.”
She added: “It is local people who were suffering and lives being disrupted by these senseless incidents and they only heighten tension in and around the greater Bishop Street/Fountain areas and that is something no one wants.”
Cllr Logue concluded: “There can be no rolling back the clock on this, or allowing these recent incidents to fester
Foyle SDLP MLA Pat Ramsey condemned those responsible.
He said: “This is reckless behaviour and those involved are only causing harm to their own community and creating more fear for people living there.”
“There is a high volume of older people living in the area and it’s not fair they are subjected to this.”
