Derry City Council is in negotiations with the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure (DCAL) regarding the “detail” of grant-aid awarded towards sporting projects in the Brandywell area of the city.
Last week, Minister Carál Ní Chuilín stressed she had not awarded Derry City Council any money towards the redevelopment of the stadium when asked about the Stadium by SDLP MLA Colum Eastwood.
She stressed that on 23 October last year, she announced her Department would invest at least £2million towards the Daisyfield-Showgrounds as part of City of Culture capital legacy projects in 2014-15.
In 2012 she said no Government funding would be available for stadium development at sub regional level until 2015 at the earliest.
A spokesperson for Derry City Council said as agreed in December, the Council had committed £2.75m towards the re-development of the Brandywell.
As part of those redevelopment plans the Council had agreed to relocate the greyhound track and replace the grass pitch with a synthetic surface.
The new look stadium wouldl also include four changing facilities to enable all year round training facilities as well as health and safety maintenance works.
The spokesperson added: “This funding commitment is in addition to £2m announced by the Minister last year for the development of the showgrounds as part of DCAL’s commitment to the Foyle Gateway Project.”
The spokesperson concluded: “The spokesperson added that Derry City Council is continuing to negotiate with DCAL regarding the detail of the grants.”
