SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan has supported a parliamentary motion at Westminster calling on the British and Irish governments to publicly and jointly encourage all parties to move speedily towards implementation of the Haass proposals.
Mr Durkan, a member of the SDLP delegation at the recent talks, said the proposals tabled at the final plenary of the multi-party talks formed the basis for “real progress.”
He added: “Having talked and worked together in all of the discussions that led to the Haass-O’Sullivan paper, it is essential we now optimise the promise and potential of large aspects of the proposals.
“I also note the widespread support and mobilisation in the North, called by the Northern Ireland Congress of Trade Unions along with others on 31 January last, to encourage real progress and end the current political paralysis.”
Mr Durkan concluded: “I am also calling on the British government to publicly and jointly with the Irish government, encourage all parties to move speedily towards implementation of the proposals.”
