At least 20 young people have been taken to hospital after falling ill at a gig at Belfast’s Odyssey Arena being attended by hundreds of Derry teenagers.
The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service declared a “major incident” earlier this evening when 60 teenagers became ill while attending a gig by renowned Dutch DJ Hardwell.
It is understood they are being treated for the effects of drugs and alcohol.
Scores of police officers, who were on duty in north Belfast at the Twaddell Avenue loyalist protest, have been diverted to the venue.
All bars have now been shut at the Odyssey.
The Ulster Hospital and the Royal Victoria Hospital have now put extra staff on standby to help cope with the situation.
Former Sinn Fein Lord Mayor of Belfast Niall O’Donnghaile tweeted: “From what I understand the event is carrying on inside and in terms of the overall number attending those affected are still small.”
Derry Daily has spoken to a number of concerned parents who have been unable to contact their sons or daughters due to no mobile phone signals available at the East Belfast venue.
