This is the photograph one young person posted on Facebook several hours before a DJ gig took place at the Odyssey Arena.Odyssey-drugs-scene-pic-3-1

And it backs up what a former Lord Mayor of Belfast said earlier that police told him teenagers attending the east Belfast concert tonight had consumed large amounts of alcohol and drugs.

It shows a bottle of cider, a quarter bottle of vodka and several packets of suspected white powder drugs in clear plastic bags and a packet of blue pills.

Around 40 people fell ill at the Hardwell DJ concert – with seven taken to the Ulster Hospital in Dundonald.

It is understood none is seriously ill with most having already been released.

John McPoland of the Ambulance said there was no need for parents to “panic” as the it had been declared a “major incident” because of the numbers involved and not because of their condition.

The scene at the Odyssey earlier tonight.

He confirmed many were suffering the effects of taking drugs and alcohol and many had arrived at the venue already heavily intoxicated.

When ambulance crews arrived at the scene they were confronted by a number of unconscious teens while many others were vomiting.

Hundreds of youngsters from Derry are attending the gig, many travelling from the city by organised bus excursions.

Parents, unable to contact children due to no phone signals at the East Belfast venue, face an anxious wait until the event ends which is understood to be around 11.00pm.
