Petrol bombs were thrown into Derry’s Fountain estate last night – the third time in a week the predominantly Protestant housing estate has come under attack.
No damaged was caused when three devices, thrown from Nailors Row at around 9.00pm, landed on a grass area.
The incidents have been widely condemned with Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness describing disturbances in the area – which police say have involved children as young as 10-years-old – as “disgraceful.”
Foyle SDLP MP Mark Durkan said those responsible were out to cause damage and their “contemptible actions” only showed they had an “utter disregard” for the many people who live nearby.
He added: “Indeed, it is a disgrace that elderly people – particularly in Alexander House – are being put through such distress and disruption.
“No one, especially elderly citizens, should be subjected to such anxiety and strain.”
Earlier this week, PSNI Chief Inspector Jon Burrows revealed a two boys – aged 13 and 14 – were arrested following disturbances on Sunday night last and the he would be reporting any children detained to Social Services.
