Oakgrove Integrated Primary and Nursery School in Derry has been congratulated by Foyle SDLP MP Mark Durkan on becoming the first school in the North West to receive the prestigious Excellence in Integrated Education Award.
In awarding the accolade, the Northern Ireland Council for Integrated Education (NICIE) said the Waterside school was an “exceptional” integrated school.
Mr Durkan said the accolade was “well-deserved.”
“I have been very impressed with both staff and pupils at Oakgrove on my many visits to the school – most recently on winning the Eco-School award in November.
“I am also proud to recall that it was me who proposed that Derry City Council would give the Rectory Field site to the school when there were a number of other competing options in the mid-90s.”
He concluded: “This exceptional recognition is well-deserved and is a credit to the leadership of the Principal, the quality of the teaching, the motivated support of other staff and parents, and of course its spirited pupils.”
