Sinn Féin Councillor Elisha McCallion has made an urgent appeal to people in Derry to be “on the alert” for a drug called red “mortal kombat.”
Cllr McCallion, a member of the Derry Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP), made her call after police in Scotland, NHS Greater Glasgow and NHS Ayrshire and Arran issued a warning about the dangers of drugs after it was reported a teenager died at the weekend after taking ill at a Glasgow nightclub.
Cllr McCallion said: “It’s unclear at this stage what caused the death and a post mortem examination will be carried out in due course.
“However, a further four people were admitted to hospital when they became ill after taking drugs.”
Cllr McCallion added whilst the appeal had been issued in Scotland, she thought it “very important” to alert people in Derry of dangers of the drug.
She added: “As we have seen with previous incidents it doesn’t take long before they find their way onto the streets of the North.
“Our appeal at the minute is to get people to stop taking these drugs, to think about it, and either pass them on to be destroyed or destroy them themselves.
“It is reported that these drugs contain a new type of slow-releasing narcotic called PMA, which means users take more without realising the effects are delayed.
“Don’t leave them lying around, don’t be tempted to take them. We don’t there be anyone losing their life taking these pills or ending up in hospital.”
Cllr McCallion concluded: “Too often have we seen what drugs can do to our communities. They destroy families and pose a massive health risk to the individuals involved. I am calling on everyone to report any sighting of this drug to the PSNI.”
