Derry CIty continued their preparations for the new Airtricity Premiership season with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Irish League Premiership leaders Cliftonville at Solitude this afternoon.
In a game totally dominated by the visitors, City boss Roddy Collins was left scratching his head at half-time wondering how the Candystripes did not go in at the break in front.
Home keeper kept the West Belfast side in the game with a number of good saves, most notably from Molloy and McEleney.
However, Derry wasted no time after the restart when recently signed defender Cliff Byrne came forward to plant a powerful header in the back of the net to give the visitors a fully deserved lead in the 47th minute.
Cliftonville almost equalised when City keeper Doherty fumbled a cross but Jarvis, a second half substitute, did well to clear the danger.
City should have extended their lead but Rory Patterson, missed two glorious opportunities when he first of all fired wide after being put through before firing straight at keeper Brown when it looked easier to score.
However, last season’s leading scorer made amends for those misses when he sealed the game seven minutes from time after being put through by Patrick McEleney.
It was a another pleasing display for Collins following last Tuesday night’s win over Institute.
Next of up Derry is a clash with Glentoran at Brandywell on Tuesday night next, the entire proceeds of which are being donated the fund set up to support former City striker Mark Farren is fight against cancer.
