A wonder goal by Derry’s Paddy McCourt has been shortlisted for one of the top awards in English football.
The former Derry City favourite’s sensational solo effort against Middlesboro towards the end of last year has seen him nominated for the Football League’s Mitre Goal of the Year 2013.
McCourt, dubbed the “Derry Pele,” dribbled past six players in a mesmerising run which ended with him placing the ball past the Middlesbrough keeper in a 3-2 Barnsley win in the Sky Bet Championship in November.
The goal – his first after joining Barnsley from Glasgow Celtic during the 2013 summer “transfer window” – became an instant hit on social network site Youtube where it has had over a quarter of a million viewers.
At the time, it was picked out by television football pundits as a possible goal of the season contender – and they made the right call!
The goal is one of ten shortlisted by Sky Television’s “Soccer AM” with members of the public deciding the five finalist at the Football League Awards being held next month.
