Representatives from Derry City Council, led by the Mayor Cllr Martin Reilly. are travelling to Singapore this week to join members of the Derry “LondonDerry” Doire crew as they complete Race 8 in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race.
During the six-day trip, the Derry group will attend a series of events including the Aerospace Networking lunch at the Irish Ambassador’s Residence, a UKT&I Clipper Race reception, the Clipper Race prizegiving ceremony and the UKT&I Aerospace and Clipper event as well as a host of business connection meetings.
As well as the Mayor, the Derry City Council delegation includes Mayoress Bronagh Reilly, Strategic Director Stephen Gillespie and Investment Officer Aeidin McCarter.
Speaking ahead of the trip, Mayor Reilly said it was a unique opportunity for city representatives to meet with Derry crew at a “significantly important” race stopover port and to link in with the trade mission to forge business and cultural links and invite them to visit the city for the stopover and homecoming festival in June.
He said: “As Mayor of the city it is a huge honour to be travelling to Singapore to represent the city and to meet and greet the crew of the Derry ‘LondonDerry’ Doire boat as they complete Race 8 and hopefully secure a podium position.
“It’s an opportunity for us to meet with key Irish diaspora and forge long-term business and cultural links that will promote the city for investment.
“We will be actively encouraging delegates to look at what our city has to offer in terms our competitive business costs, digital connections, super talented labour market and excellence in research as well as inviting them to put Clipper Race Derry stopover in their diary as a must-see event.”
Mayor Reilly said the city’s participation in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race and representation at the international trade mission provided a unique opportunity to showcase and promote the city to those attending the trade mission and to avail of opportunities to meet with more companies in international markets.
He concluded: “This is a hugely significant trade mission which provides us with a great opportunity to promote the city and the Foyle Maritime Festival. It’s an opportunity for us to maximise the city’s presence in the international market and will open up opportunities for us for more companies in international markets.”
