SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan has said he will be supporting a ban on smoking in cars with children present when the issue is put to a vote in Westminster later today.
Although a ban would only affect England (as the issue is the responsibility of the devolved governments elsewhere in the UK), the charity Northern Ireland Chest, Heart and Stroke have said they hoped any legislation would “galvanise” the NI assembly into action.
Mr Durkan said: “As a legislator in the House of Commons this is about setting an important principle and precedent.
“While always according due respect to parental rights and responsibilities, I also subscribe to the ethic that ‘every child is our child’ when it comes to essential health and safety which can be underpinned by law.”
