Derry is on “yellow alert” with forecasters predicting temperatures to plummet overnight to below freezing ahead of snow.
The Met Office has issued the warning as a band of rain and hill snow is set to spread from the east before clearing to take temperatures down below freezing before dawn.
Motorists are being advised to drive with care, especially on untreated roads.
A Met Office spokesperson said: “An active frontal system will cross Northern Ireland in the early hours of Tuesday clearing eastwards by dawn. With falling temperatures accompanying clearing skies, icy stretches are likely to form, especially where earlier treatment may have been washed off.”
After an icy start, tomorrow will be bright with sunny spells developing before showers turn to sleet and snow with moderate falls on the higher ground, especially in the Sperrins.
Snow showers will continue into tomorrow evening with more icy conditions.
Looking ahead to Wednesday, a low pressure will sweep in from the south to bring wet and windy conditions, with rainfall up to three inches in some areas.
