Rural communities living along the border have been called on to follow the example of a Derry housing estate and take part in a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme in order to prevent crime in their area.
The call comes from Derry City SDLP Cllr Angela Dobbins who has urged rural communities to follow the example of residents of Mansfield Grove in the Ballyarnett area of Derry who recently set up a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme.
Cllr Dobbins’ call also follows the recent upsurge in burglaries at homes, businesses and vehicles along the Derry-Donegal border.
She added: “I would urge residents in the periphery of our city and especially those in rural, border communities to avail of the services the Neighbourhood Watch scheme provides.
“Neighbourhood Watch is one of the biggest and most successful crime prevention initiatives and is grounded in a partnership between the community, the police and other statutory agencies.
“This scheme would make a real contribution to safety and well-being in rural areas and would play a vital role in protecting our elderly and the more vulnerable who are easily targeted.”
Cllr Dobbins also urged residents “make an effort” to look out for their neighbours especially those in more remote areas.”
She concluded: “Anyone considering setting up a scheme can contact the Derry Policing and Community Safety Partnership on 028 71376565.”
