This morning’s snow fall is the first of what could be a number over the next two days, forecasters are saying.
Although most roads are passable, motorists have been warned there is a risk of ice in many places and to drive carefully and at a reasonable speed.
There are no reports of any major accidents as a result of the freezing weather.
The Met Office says today will remain bright with some good sunny spells but also some showers falling as snow with accumulations of 2-5 cm are likely on ground above 150-200 metres with perhaps 10 cms or more above 300 metres.
On low ground, lying snow will tend to melt between showers during the day but 1-3 cms may settle tonight.
After a cold dry and sunny start tomorrow, cloud and rain with hill snow will spread up from the south late morning onwards.
A Met Office spokesperson said: “Icy stretches will also reform in the evening, these lasting well into Wednesday morning. The public should be aware of the risk of some travel disruption and difficult driving conditions.”
